Gatlinburg Offers the Best in Old Fashioned Hospitality
Imagine the little Swiss village under the Christmas tree, Gatlinburg is the closest you will ever get to stepping inside.
In 1807 Martha Jane Heskey Ogle, along with family and friends settled in the mountainous region of East Tennessee, currently known as Gatlinburg. Now a resort town at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg offers something for everyone.
The beauty of the area is one of its greatest attractions and something everyone can enjoy. The Cherokee called it shaconage, or “place of the blue smoke.” Mist hovers at the peaks of the mountains giving them their smoky appearance.
Gatlinburg Fishing
Find your stream and go for it! The area is known for its trout fishing. Although, there is no fishing on Thursdays inside Gatlinburg city limits, as the city stocks the streams on that day each week. A license is required unless fishing before March 1st and for children less than 12 years of age. With many lakes and streams to choose from, it will be difficult to narrow it down so don’t limit yourself, move around and enjoy the scenery.
Arts and Crafts
Gatlinburg hosts a unique area called the Arts & Crafts Community. Established in 1937 artists peddle their wares on an eight-mile loop through the mountains. Everything from pottery to candy can be found in this neighborhood of artisans. Most shops are open seven days a week, year-round.
Gatlinburg Hiking
There is a trail for everyone in the Great Smokey Mountains. Whether you prefer an easy stroll up a mountain or are a serious hiker, the park offers more than 800 trails to explore and also has the distinction of being part of the Appalachian Trail.
Shopping in Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg offers several different shopping venues. If you like outlet shopping, the neighboring town of Pigeon Forge offers several malls full of brand name label stores such as Nine West and Fossil. If specialty boutiques are more your style, you will find one-of-a-kind items in the many shops. Everything from outdoor gear at the Happy Hiker to locally made jewelry at Another Me can be found in the shops of Gatlinburg.
Gatlinburg Seasonal Events
An event for every season makes Gatlinburg the ideal place to visit any time of the year. The main attraction in winter is Fantasy of Lights. The city is ablaze with five million Christmas lights and hosts many parades and seasonal activities from November 4th to February 22nd, making it the perfect place to spend New Year’s Eve. A street festival on December 31st with fireworks and a ball drop are all part of the celebration.
Gatlinburg Weddings
If you want a scenic wedding, Gatlinburg is the place to tie the knot. The town has many wedding chapels and churches to choose from. Most offer packages with secluded cabins and romantic hideaways. All the services you would normally expect can be found for your special day such as, florists, caterers and limo services. Tennessee requires a photo I.D., social security card and divorce papers if previously married.
